The Forgotten History of Military Barracks in Germany.

This website is intended to present the history of many of the military barracks in Germany which were originally built for the Wehrmacht before The Second World War. For a few short years before the defeat of Germany in 1945 these facilities comprised the home Garrisons for the German serviceman. After the British took control of these sites much rumour and myth surrounded their use by the Wehrmacht and many were falsely claimed to be barracks built for the Waffen-SS.

The intention of this project is to present a pictorial history of the various different British Armed Forces barracks in Germany when they were used by the occupants they were originally intended for, the Wehrmacht. It is hoped that some of the unfounded stories and fables can be dismissed and that those who served in these locations can see their former or current homes in a different perspective.

What this site is and is not

This site is a pictorial historical record of specific barracks used by British Forces and also used by the Wehrmacht prior to 1945. It is not an official history of Cold War BAOR Germany. It is intended to reveal the hidden past behind what was home for thousands of servicemen. It is a history of specific locations in Germany where I have a personal attachment to, it is not (yet) a record of all Wehrmacht sites in the former BAOR sector and beyond. ForgottenHistory.co.uk does not seek to glorify National Socialism or The Third Reich, merely to present an illustrated record of these barracks in use by the German Wehrmacht, a period almost forgotten from history. I encourage all to visit and see the results of National Socialism in person at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, located only a kilometre from the British Army’s principal Garrison in Germany.
